Another Reason to Get a Dog
Because they’re really cute and sweet and I love them.
Among the other reasons: Service dogs trained to help people with psychiatric disabilities can help them recover and even save their lives! I saw a story on TV a few weeks ago about a man who had a dog to help him cope with depression. The dog would pester him and insist on going out for a walk if the man seemed down. The dog eventually demonstrated that he also had a natural gift for sensing when people were about to have heart attacks, so that was a pretty good bonus.
Today, I read a story about a service dog that saved its owner’s life by calling 911 when the man had a diabetic seizure. The dog—Belle—is also trained to use its sense of smell to track changes in blood sugar. The beagle apparently throws a fit when “something seems off.” I figured this might be of interest to our readers because studies have shown that people with mental illnesses are much more likely than the general population to have or develop diabetes.

Have a great afternoon! (And give your dog an extra treat today from me.)
